Hey Hey!
My name is Magnus, I’m a guitar instructor based in Nairobi, and
I’ve been teaching guitar since 2014
I started learning guitar when I was super young, about 4 years old but I absolutely hated it! My dad got me a steel string guitar and combined with my new-born soft hands, each lesson was pain and dread.
I took lessons till I was about 9 years old but with little fruit. I didn’t practice and I was a bad student. I eventually stopped and with relief hehe. The problem was, it was picked for me, I didn’t pick it for myself.
My dad eventually got me a game called ‘Guitar Hero’ on PlayStation 2, and that is where my guitar journey officially began.
I would play guitar hero for hours on the weekends, carry it to my friends’ houses – I even carried it to my friends’ house in Malaysia, and man we would rock that thing till the morning.
At one point when I was 13 I was playing a solo on guitar hero, I think it was ‘Bark at the moon’ by Ozzy Osborne, and during the main solo, I remember having the thought “This is so cool… Nah man, I need to start playing the guitar.”
Having forgotten everything I ever learnt except for ‘A Major’, I picked up my 3/4 size classical guitar and signed up for lessons again when I hit high school in January 2010.
I got my first Electric Guitar in 2011, got a lot of experience playing in Friday Christian Unions & Sunday Chapels.
Eventually got to see what professional musicians were like when I entered Nairobi Chapel, and I was inspired to get better for every Sunday service.
Shout-out to Newmann, one of the craziest guitarists I’ve ever known. He was a major character that I aspired to become.
I began teaching my first student, James, in 2014, and to this day in 2026, he’s still playing his guitar – he’s such a gear-head (Someone who’s obsessed with equipment i.e. guitar amps, pedals, setup etc) but he’s a legit guitar player and I am grateful to have been with him from the beginning and see him go so far.
Now, I continue to teach Guitar lessons primarily in Nairobi, and through videos which I post privately through courses, and some publicly on YouTube.
I only teach guitar based instruments such as:
- Acoustic Guitar
- Electric Guitar
- Bass Guitar
- Ukulele
- Guitalele
If you have a banjo or mandolin, that’s cool – we can still make it work. Just don’t call me for piano lessons – I’m not that kinda guy.
If you are motivated, a lover of music, and willing to pick up your guitar most days of the week, then I’m ready to be your guitar instructor.
Let’s have fun and rock it out!
